This basic sailing class will teach you how to sail in a 14' 420 class sailboat, equipped with a main sail and jib. The 420 offers a simple learning vehicle for beginning sailors and allows quick learner's a challenge to better their sailing skills when they are ready. Everyone will be allowed to skipper and crew while learning to sail. Instruction will be geared toward learning sailing skills from the basics of on the water safety, rigging and unrigging a boat, how to sail a boat on all points of sail, how to sail a boat around a marked course, the basic sailing rules of the road, and landing and leaving a pier with confidence. This program will facilitate sailing instruction in a fun and entertaining way allowing students to building confidence while on a sailboat. Participates must be a confident swimmer, be physically fit, and willing to get wet on occasion. Sign up is through the Parks and Recreation Departments of the following communities: Pewaukee, Sussex, Hartland, and the Town of Delafield.

This class will introduce the basics. Your sailor will learn to steer a sailboat, sail a small buoyed course, rig and unrig, and land their boat at the pier. Moreover, your sailors will learn to reach, sail upwind, and sail downwind in light to medium wind. Your sailor will not be out alone in heavy wind. Games and activities will be used to help the sailors learn boat-handling skills. The students should sail in the Monday night PLSS races, the Beulah Fun and Pram Power Regattas. Register early, space is limited to ten sailors per session!
